Chapter Thirty-One: Mason Ryan

When Simon handed over the leather ring to repair it by the leather maker, the carriage was empty.

"Little Clein, you should take the horse back to the hotel first. I'll go outside the city wall to find a stonemason." Simon patted Little Clein's head, tidied up his clothes, and quickly walked away from the leather shop with a huge smell.

Simon walked along the path under the city wall next to the leather shop and soon arrived at the small side door of the west section of Port Aberdoron.

"Hello, sir." Two gatekeepers wearing soft armored caps and holding spears looked in surprise as a guy in mail and dressed in an emblem came out of the dark alley full of feces.

"Maybe it was a servant who did some dirty work." It was not until Simon walked out of the side door that the two soldiers came to their senses and whispered and discussed and guessed.

"What a fresh air!" After leaving the town, Simon suddenly felt that his nose was baptized.

Since the construction of the new wall in Port Aberdoron started with the north wall, Simon had to walk north along a small road outside the city surrounding the wall.

"There are a lot of feces and urine here." Simon couldn't help but walk away from the city wall and off the path and on the grass. After walking for a while, a hot and slender column of water spewed down from the city wall.

Simon turned his head and saw that an archer on the city wall was convenient for holding the wall with his forehand. Generally, guards like this who were guarding on the city wall were not allowed to leave the post and go to the toilet halfway, so the soldiers were basically solved on the spot if they had internal emergency. Anyway, no one cared or felt it was inappropriate.

Unlike the large vacant grassland outside the west wall, the north wall is shrouded in dust raised by many stone carriages and stone cattle.

The shirtless and rough stonemasons with beads of beans and sweat were hard to polish the stones, while many ragged workers were scolding some of the slightly decent stonemasons, doing their own work.

"How many times have you fools said that this is not the case!" A stonemason in a slightly better dress was constantly yelling loudly, directing a group of clumsy workers to build simple scaffolding.

Through the noisy and busy construction site, Simon came to this big red and white striped tent.

"Sir, what's wrong with you?" Two soldiers wearing short mail and wide-brimmed helmets at the door blocked Simon's way.

They seemed to be guards sent by the Duke to protect the high-level craftsmen.

"I am Sir Simon of the Dorsten family, come to find the stonemaster Master Karen." After Simon said to the guards, the other party bowed a little and opened the curtain door.

The first thing that came out of the tent was a strong smell of wine.

Simon simply looked around the tent, and there were debris piled up everywhere, and there were several dishes of half-eat bread and barbecue on the wooden barrel.

The most conspicuous thing is the large wooden table in the middle of the tent, which is filled with various simple maps and analysis of the new city wall design scheme.

In addition, there are also pens and inks and various measuring tools scattered on the table.

Inside the tent there were three old men in beautiful clothes sitting at the table holding wine glasses while drinking, while a young man standing beside them was burning.

"Little Ryan, are you planning to build a beautiful big house on the city wall? Or do you think you can move in and live with those smelly wall guard soldiers? I really don't know what you learned when you went to Italy a few years ago!" An old man with gray hair and big nostrils laughed and slapped the parchment manuscript handed over by the young man to the edge of the table.

"No, Uncle Roy, please take a look. The towers and culverts designed in this way can definitely withstand the tricky attacks of various enemies!" The young man said in dissatisfaction.

"Little Ryan, remember, our budget is not very good. Don't mention this useless pattern relief, as well as the practical tower wall design that we have never seen and have never tested," a kind old man patted the young man on the shoulder.

"Oh? Is this?" Everyone in the tent noticed Simon who had just entered the door of the tent. "Sorry, this sir, we were so fascinated by the discussion just now that we didn't notice you. What's wrong with you?"

"I am Sir Simon of the Dorsten family in the south. I want to invite a skilled stonemason to my territory to build a castle." Although Simon knew that it was very costly to invite such a professional stonemason, he weighed his heavy wallet and immediately became confident.

"Oh, sir! Although I am very interested, we have signed a contract and have to stay here until the construction of the new wall in Port Aberdoron is completed." An old man with bearded beard twisted his beard and shook his head regretfully.

"That's a pity," Simon was a little distressed, but he noticed the young man behind the gentle old man in the middle, who was eager to try. "What about this young man? He also signed a contract?"

"No, Lord, he is my nephew Little Ryan, and also my apprentice. Although he has been studying in the south for a few years, I don't think he can now take on the task of designing and building a practical castle for you." The kind old man explained to Simon with a smile.

"Please, Uncle Karen! I've gotten rid of that simple and practical construction plan." The young man covered his face and smiled helplessly.

"You unreliable brat, I'm afraid you will give this adult some bad ideas. If something goes wrong then, our family will not be able to bear the blow and compensation!" The kind old man frowned slightly, turned his head and scolded the young man behind him.

"To be honest, respected Master Karen, I have to complete my castle construction before late summer, and the construction period is still a bit tight. Since this young man is competent, I don't have so much spare time to find a new free stonemason." Simon said, noting the parchment manuscript that the old man with big white hair and big nostrils slapped on the corner of the table.

"Although he designed a lot of useless carvings and beautiful corner columns on the city walls and the outer walls of the tower, the structure and concept of the tower design are quite novel." Simon thought to himself.

"Sir, if you persist so much," the kind old man narrowed his eyes, constantly rubbing his long white beard, thinking in his mind, "Okay, I agree to Little Ryan to go to your territory to help you build the castle."

"Uncle Karen, it's great. Don't worry, I will definitely help this adult to create the strongest and most difficult to attack the whole kingdom..." The young man Ryan said loudly as if he had won the grand prize, but after being glared at the kind old man, he shut up again.

"Mr., although he is from my disciple, he is only an apprentice, so I can't charge you too much money. In this way, you give twenty silver coins of Transnier, and Ryan will serve your territory until your castle is completed." The kind old man touched his nose, stood up, and pulled out a wrinkled blank parchment from the pile of debris behind him.

"No problem." Simon nodded. He knew that the cost of hiring an old stonemason who had become famous and experienced for a long time would make him feel pain for a long time. The price of twenty silver coins for hiring his apprentices was acceptable and not too expensive.

"Very good, Lord, it's such a pleasant deal! Come on, Roy, write a contract for Little Ryan," said the gentle old man handed the parchment to the old man with big nostrils, and then looked at Lion with a blushing face. "You little guy, it's really uneasy. Remember, use a simple and practical solution, which is safe and stable, and will not make any mistakes."

"Don't worry, Uncle Karen!" Ryan's head was as if a little chicken pecked at rice.

………

Simon and Ryan walked out of the tent together and walked towards the city. Looking at the drawings Ryan was carrying, Simon was very curious.

"Lian, I see that your drawings are designed very novelly. Did you learn them in Rome?" Simon pulled out a roll of parchment manuscripts and graphic sections from Lian's arms and looked at them carefully.

"That's right, Lord. In addition, I have also visited many castles and towns left by the great Roman Empire back then, which gave me a lot of insights and new inspiration." Speaking of his old career, Ryan couldn't stop his mouth.

"Hey! Sir, look at this," said Ryan, pointing to a cross-sectional view of the tower on parchment. "Just like this tower, if we can build raids in the tower's city teeth and build bulging arching columns and roofs on the raids, it will be difficult for the enemy to climb into the tower along the siege ladder, and the enemy's archers will find it difficult to shoot arrows into this gap to kill the soldiers in the tower. The final effect is that the archers and soldiers in our tower can not only have a broad vision, but also throw large stones from the gap to attack the enemies under the city wall."
