Scene 270. Reiner's Theory of Evolution

Baptist and Reiner left the classroom and came to the end of the corridor where you could see the view outside the window.

Due to the end of the rainy season, the water level in Irazmas will not be replenished and will gradually decrease in nearly half a month. Most of the ground will be exposed. These soils that have been soaked in water for a long time have accumulated a large amount of nutrients at this time, which is very fertile and is enough to support the plants to grow vigorously.

Baptister glanced at Lenner.

"What's the matter with me?"

"Mr. Baptiste, I found a document in the library of the institute last night."

Reiner said, taking out a stack of paper from the storage bag.

This is a biological investigation of the Erazmas semi-plane, but it is not an existing organism, but a study based on various fossils.

That is, the investigation of creatures that no longer exist.

"What do you want to say?"

Baptist took the information and read a few pages casually.

"This is a fossil investigation of paleontology. I saw the ancient species of rainforest falcons inside. This kind of falcon is not much different from conventional falcons, at least there is no difference in the structure of the fossil reaction."

Reiner explained that there were some excavation traces on the data, including the remains of the rainforest falcon’s nest, bone fossils, and fossils obtained after being wrapped in soft soil.

"This is a fossil that is more than 1,800 years old. The rainforest falcon in the semi-plane of the Irazmas is no different from the falcon outside, but many differences can be clearly seen on the fossil that is more than 1,200 years old."

He turned one page and on the second page, there were several fossils of different shapes.

"According to investigations, the climate of the Irazmas semi-plane has not always been like this. One thousand eight hundred years ago, this place was a region with distinct four seasons like the main plane, and the first high water level appeared in 1,100 years ago. It can be inferred that during this period, the climate of Irazmas changed."

In terms of data, the fossils of the Rainforest Falcon have different shapes. They have larger wings than ordinary people, and some claws have changed, which are closer to swans and ducks. Since the fossils cannot reflect the changes in the feathers and internal organs, it is impossible to see whether these Rainforest Falcons have evolved glands that secrete oil.

"There are huge differences in the shapes of these rainforest falcons, and they are not completely evolving in one direction. But in the end, among the fossils that have been eight hundred years ago, only the more developed wings have survived, which is not much different from the current rainforest falcons."

Baptiste didn't say anything, he took a few glances at the picture above.

In addition to the Rainforest Falcon, Reiner also showed fossils of several other animals. In the hundreds of years when the climate of the Irazmas semi-plane changed, these creatures changed to varying degrees from their ancient appearance, and they all had stages of coexistence of multiple forms, not as Baptist said, evolving in the same direction.

"Mr. Baptiste, I actually have some guesses, I don't know if you want to listen."

Reiner put away the information and said to Baptiste.

"Say it, different opinions help us think."

Baptist nodded slightly, but did not say anything to Reiner's previous information that obviously used to refute him.

"I think the process of biological evolution is not completed in one or two generations, and this process will last for a long time."

Reiner said first, he observed Baptist's expression and then spoke.

"The evolution of organisms is definitely not something that happens for no reason. There must be a reason. But I think that if we really have to wait until the environment changes, then organisms can adapt to it for a certain amount of time. Just like the Irazmas semi-plane, its climate has only been intertwined from the original four seasons to the current rainy and dry seasons, and it only takes one or two years to the process of intersecting it."

The past tree fossils can be found underground in Erazmas, and it is easy to accurately determine the time of Erazmas' climate change. It can be seen that the climate change of this semi-plane was almost completed within five years. In this isolated semi-plane, Reiner speculated that artificial factors must be included.

"So, I think that changes in biological traits are earlier than changes in the environment. According to genetic theory, blood vessel factors are the main factor that determines traits, and blood vessel factors are not completely stable and may undergo mutations. The mutated blood vessel factors will inevitably cause changes in external traits. Therefore, in my guess, the first step in evolution is the mutation of blood vessel factors."

Reiner said, paying attention to the expression on Baptister's face, but unfortunately, Baptister did not have obvious emotional fluctuations.

"This mutation is not accidental, but common and continuous, and biological evolution is not based on individuals, but on populations. In fact, mutations occur every moment, but are so small that they cannot be observed. However, a sufficient quantity will trigger qualitative changes, which is the quantitative change that causes qualitative changes."

After walking two steps, Reiner looked out the window, a colorful world.

"The accumulation of mutations will eventually affect the traits of organisms. It can be imagined that at a certain period of time, the rainforest falcons have exhibited many different forms, including strong wings and flying in higher skyscrapers, and also developed species that swim in the water and prey on fish. These rainforest falcons with different tendencies live together in this semi-plane and divide different populations."

Reiner's story seems to depict such a picture, where different birds soar in the sky, and the Irazmas semi-plane is in harmony, but no one knows that in the near future, there will be earth-shaking changes here.

"The next step is the change of the environment. The climate in the Erazmas semi-plane changed drastically. At the beginning, most of the rainforest falcons could continue to survive, but as the four seasons clearly turned into storms and scorching sun droughts, many types of rainforest falcons began to fail to adapt to the environment and eventually died. These different populations of rainforest falcons began to gradually decrease. In the end, there was only one type, that is, the ancestors of the rainforest falcons we saw now survived. This process, I call it natural selection."

Natural selection is not only limited to environmental changes, invasion of alien species, and even human activities will lead to the extinction of species. Choice is like a sieve, retaining traits suitable for the environment, while those that are not suitable will be screened away.

"Of course, these surviving falcons cannot be called rainforest falcons. If they want to continue to adapt to the environment of the Erazmas semi-plane in the next few hundred years, they need an important step, that is, to maintain the stability of blood vessel factors. Unlike humans, animals can independently control the reproduction process. If they are not restricted, the remaining traits will easily be diluted and new species cannot be formed."

Reiner thought of what the Pure Blood School did. In fact, to a certain extent, they were indeed maintaining the purity of their own bloodline.
