103 The Importance of Archers

In addition to three regular Roman legions, Brutu also has the same number of auxiliary legions. These auxiliary legions are not professional soldiers and have relatively complex sources.

There were soldiers recruited from the Balkans conquered by the Roman Republic, as well as wandering mercenaries, or citizens who lost their jobs due to the influx of slaves in the Roman Republic.

These auxiliary legions have not had that high requirements for soldiers, and their military salary is low, and their weapons and equipment have not been unified. They are mainly used to cooperate with regular Roman legions to fight and act as chores such as civil servants.

Of course, on the conquered land, the auxiliary legion can be immediately converted into local security forces without having to let the Roman legion split, which will lead to the weakening of field forces.

This is how the Roman Republic ensures that during the conquest, the main elite will not be dispersed and stationed in the process of conquest because of the increasing number of territory.

Brutu originally had three regular Roman legions under his command, each of which was assigned to two auxiliary legions, with a total of six auxiliary legions. However, due to the need to occupy the Balkan war zone, only three auxiliary legions are now being brought to the battlefield.

The remaining auxiliary legions were dispersed to various cities and transportation key points to guard.

The Balkan War Zone was not transformed into a province by the Roman Republic because it was just conquered and was still in the military control stage.

Of course, many places in the Balkan War Zone have begun to set up recruitment sites, and Brutu is expanding auxiliary troops to make up for the dispersion of troops caused by public security garrisoning.

However, the invasion of the Han Empire interrupted this rhythm.

The three Roman legions present a triangular array, while the auxiliary legions are interspersed between or periphery of the three legions.

The proportion of heavy infantry in the auxiliary legion is very low, and the armor rate is not high. Most of them are projectile troops and light infantry.

The regular Roman legions were all heavy infantry wearing Roman standard chain mail, wearing iron helmets, holding large egg-shaped shields, and wearing javelins and daggers.

Because the bows and arrows of this era are not powerful and have limited lethality to heavy armor targets, the Roman legion did not pay attention to projection troops such as archers, but instead took javelins with excellent armor-breaking ability as standard.

At the same time, except for scout cavalry, the regular Roman legion was all infantry units, and the cavalry units during combat all came from auxiliary soldiers.

In the Roman army, the cavalry were light infantry, holding spears and sabers in their hands. Because of the lack of stirrups, they were not equipped with bows and arrows.

After the two sides were arranged in an array, Brutu followed the traditional Roman tactics and asked the projectile troops in the auxiliary legion to attack first and harass the enemy.

Amid the sound of trumpets, a large group of chaotic formations were lined up, but the relatively dense auxiliary legion projection troops began to advance, while the Roman legion in the rear stood still.

Compared with the projectile troops of the Roman Republic, Xiao Yunyang's side of the Han army had a special archer force.

They lined up in loose archer shooting arrays, facing forward, forming the first array.

Then, insert the arrows on the mud in front of them, and insert them diagonally in the most convenient position to get started!

Each archer inserted ten arrows in a row in front of the land!

Not to mention the Roman soldiers opposite, even the Bulgarian soldiers who were also friendly troops were full of doubts.

They don’t understand why they should put a good arrow in the land in front of their feet?

The archers of the Han army selected hunters among the indigenous whites and archers who originally had few archers in the Macedonian Kingdom. These archers were not actually the main soldiers in the Han army, but were similar to auxiliary soldiers.

Therefore, most of the archers in the Han army were ordinary people.

After all, among the four major provinces of the Han Empire, few people who have truly entered the samurai rank are specialized in bows and arrows, and most samurai do not even use bows and arrows!

The bow and arrow are not enough to pull the bow, it must be able to shoot accurately!

Even if you are ejecting, you must have a basic accuracy, otherwise it would not be a strange thing to eject it and eject it into your own people...

As the enemy projection troops approached, dozens of archers in the Han army's archers array suddenly appeared, and people scattered in different archers arrays shot an arrow.

These arrows were like an uneven line, marking the shooting points for other archers and officers at all levels.

The Han army's archers had no rich combat experience, and the officers' eyesight was not as good as seeing the effective killing distance of the bow and arrow shooting, so the archers who needed to test the shooting before the war shot the target.

On the battlefield of thousands or tens of thousands of people, dozens of arrows are nothing, not to mention that people have not been shot yet...

However, when the Roman projection troops crossed the line target, the Han army archers suddenly flew into pieces of arrow rain!

Thousands of archers Xiao Yunyang plundered from the four major provinces, used their energy to suck the arrows in his hands at the fastest speed!

After shooting an arrow, he did not look at his own results. He quickly and skillfully pulled up new arrows from the land in front to pull the bowstring and shot them out again!

All the archer needs to do is bend over, pull the bow, and loosen the force!

The Han army's archers did not consider their arm strength at all. The order they received was to shoot all ten arrows out in the shortest time.

The projection troops of the Roman legion were not much worse than those of the Han army, but they were used to direct shooting (direct shooting was more accurate). After all, the weapons used by the Roman legion troops were not only bows and arrows, but also messy weapons such as stone caster light javelins.

You can also see the crossbow!

These are all weapons and equipment absorbed by the Roman Republic during the conquest. The effect is not very outstanding, so they are used to arm the auxiliary legion.

As a result, before the Roman projection troops reached the effective shooting distance, they were fully covered by the rain of arrows falling from the sky!

This is a life-throwing projection of several thousand archers, and the Roman projection troops were so large that there were nearly 10,000 people!

As expected, in just over a dozen minutes, the Roman projection troops were shot down by the rain of arrows that were constantly landing before they reached the best effective range!

The Roman projecting troops rushed to the rigorous Roman legion behind.

At the same time, the Han army sounded the horn of the attack very promptly.

The Imperial Legion of 10,000 people, with a long spear in hand and a minimum level 1 warrior, launched a full-scale attack under the order of Xiao Yunyang!

Xiao Yunyang knew in his heart that the attack might not necessarily defeat the enemy at this time. After all, the only thing that collapsed on the opposite side was the projection troops in the auxiliary legion, and the Roman legion behind seemed to be motionless.

However, Xiao Yunyang did not care how many more white soldiers would die in the war!
