Chapter 82 Cleaning and Purification
We were surrounded by the rescued civilians and returned to the north gate of Cross City in a warm and joyful atmosphere.
When we got here, a small team of soldiers holding spears and mechanical crossbows were patrolling. I guess the leader must have seen Hickrad and me, because the next second he took a whistle from his waist and put it in his mouth.
The sharp whistle sounded instantly and then spread at a very fast speed, and the other end of the city wall immediately responded.
Hickrad and I signaled the civilians not to panic, but we took two steps forward and came to the patrol team.
I could see that the city wall was already in chaos, and a large number of soldiers emerged from the guard tower, and the city gate was quickly opened. The soldiers lined up in two groups ran out quickly, quickly surrounding us, pointing the spear and crossbow in their hands firmly at me and Hickrad.
"Okay, OK, kill the two suspects of the captain of the City Guard, Savoscott, and Hiccrad Laxos," a man like a senior officer walked out of the team, walked to us with a gloomy expression, and shouted loudly: "You two enemies of all Cross citizens dare to return to the gate of this city with a swagger!?"
"I don't think I am the enemy of Cross, a respected officer," I sat leisurely on the ground and looked at the officer and said, "maybe you should ask me what these people behind me think."
The officer raised his head as he said. Judging from his sudden shocked expression, he might have really seen the civilian team behind me now.
"What's going on!? Viscount Claude? How could it be?" he said in surprise. "Aren't you missing? Could it be this damn evildoer..."
"I think there are some misunderstandings in this, Captain Brad Collow," said the middle-aged nobleman, Viscount Claude from Brad Collow, coughed twice and walked to him, "We are all the evil men you call, saved by Mr. Saren."
"Salute to you, dear Lord Viscount," Brad Collow said with some embarrassment: "But this Savos, or Salon, is this gentleman and his accomplice Hicklad fled Cross after murdering the new captain of the City Guard Samuel, and they are now wanted criminals requested by the Town Hall."
"I think I can give you a reasonable explanation for this, the dedicated soldiers," Viscount Claude smiled disconcertingly, "we were actually captured by the Church of the Source of Plague, and I did not find nothing during the period of time I was captured."
He said this and narrowed his eyes slightly, "Those believers probably didn't expect that more than a hundred people could escape from heaven, so they let us know a lot of things that we shouldn't have known."
"The most important thing is," he looked at Brad Collow and clenched his fists hard. "That is, there are a large number of plague-source believers in the cities of Cross and Gray Mist, and many of them are even in high positions."
"And Captain Samuel you mentioned is one of them."
"How could it be!?" Brad Collow took two steps back in a row, "Then Captain Wells' death..."
"Yes, they did it," I said, "We are hunters from the Vampire Hunter Guild. After we arrived at Cross, Captain Wells commissioned us to investigate."
"I didn't expect Cross to have so many spies from the source of the plague," I sighed. "After we received this commission, we heard the news of Wells' murder. You should all know that he was killed by a soldier from the City Guard."
"Although you have not cleared all suspicions for you, there are indeed many doubts about the more than one hundred Cross citizens saved behind you, and Captain Samuel's superiority," Brad Collow looked at us vigilantly, and then waved his hand, "Come with me, my soldiers and I will escort you to the town hall."
"All attention!" he shouted loudly, "The front team turns into the back team, escorting the rescued citizens to the town hall!"
The soldiers under the squad leader were indeed well trained by him. Even though the main target on the wanted order was right in front of them, they did not hesitate at all and quickly changed the direction of their journey according to Brad Collow's order.
Under the escort of more than fifty soldiers under his command, we were able to enter Cross City smoothly. Many citizens along the way were shocked and whispered when they saw us, but they were soon "politely" invited back to their respective houses by Brad Collo.
Under their escort, we soon arrived at the gate of the city hall. The group was hurriedly walking out. They were led by a thirty-five or six-year-old man. Everyone had a look of discontent and confusion on their faces, and seemed to be disturbed by the movements on the street.
"Brad Collo? What's going on?" The man in charge looked at Brad Collo standing in the square under the stairs of the town hall. "Why are you with those two criminals? And those behind them, who are they?"
While he was speaking, a large group of guards wearing gorgeous golden armor and holding stinging swords also emerged from the city hall and served on the left and right sides of the noble team.
"Jian, Baron Kolf Chaco," Brad Kollo bowed to the baron first, then looked around and whispered: "These are all civilians who disappeared a few days ago! They were rescued by our wanted Savoscott and Hiccrad Laxos."
"More importantly, according to what these rescued people said, there are many plague-source believers hidden in our beautiful city of Cross! Captain Wells' death was planned by them! And later Captain Samuel did die at the hands of these two people, but that was because he was a plague-source believer!"
"Now, I doubt it," he turned around and looked at Baron Kolf Chaco, whose face was gloomy not far away. "There are also a large number of spies from the source of the plague in the town hall, and you, Baron Kolf Chaco, are their leader!"
His accusations caused an uproar among the citizens around him, and even some of the nobles who were originally standing beside Kolf Chaco showed suspicion.
I stood beside Brad Collow and carefully observed the expressions of each nobleman. Kolf Chaco was the person in charge of the source of the plague in Cross City, no doubt because Viscount Claude heard this with his own ear.
But there are more Viscount Claude's unidentified congregation hidden in the city, and now is the best opportunity to seize them.
Those nobles with doubts should be fine, but those nobles with gloomy faces like Baron Kolf Chaco are likely to be his helpers, other spies from the source of the plague.
"The source of plague, the source of plague," I chuckled, "Today is the end of your life on this island."
"What about the evidence? Brad Kollo?" Baron Kolf Chaco looked at the captain of the city gate with a dark face. "You should know how serious the unreasonable charge against a nobleman is."
"Of course I know, Kolf Chaco," Brad Kollo responded by pulling out the sword at his waist. "It's a pity that many of me heard those believers praise your 'merits' when they were captured!"
"You know this is not enough to win the trust!" Kolf Chaco also roared, "Who knows if these rescued people you call, are they brainwashed spies by the church of the Source of Plague."
"I think I can explain this clearly," I stood up and coughed a few times. "I believe everyone here knows me. Even if I don't know, I have seen me on the wanted order. I am Savoscott."
"To escape the wanted arrest of Cross City, my companion, another respectable and kind Mr. Hickrad, whom you want, went deep into the sunshine woods on Grey Mire Island, but unexpectedly discovered the secret base of the Plague Source Cult there."
"After some effort, we successfully penetrated into this base, and at this moment, we found that they were arresting the island's residents one by one."
"Ah, maybe you're wondering, does this have anything to do with what we're talking about now? Don't deny it, I can see this from the faces of all the gentlemen," I waved my hand, "Let's get to the point. The key point is that in order to rescue these civilians and to revenge, I turned that town into a sea of fire."
In order to support my comments from the side, I whispered to the name of the flame, then gently snapped my fingers, and a small flame appeared at the tip of my left finger.
Ignoring the screams coming from all around me, I continued to smile and said, "As you all see, I am a fire magician. As long as you go to the depths of the sunshine woods, you will find a town that has been severely burned and almost razed to the ground."
"That's what I'm going to say, Baron Kolfchako," I looked up at the door of the town hall, and the pale faced Kolfchako, "These rescued, determined gentlemen and ladies cannot be spies unless they are really willing to lose their money and pay all their foundation on this island."
My words quickly resonated, "He was right," I heard a noble whisper, "It is logically different that these cultists could not destroy their bases and kill all the believers in order to make us believe that they are not spies."
"In order to prevent all the respected good gentlemen from continuing to make things worse, I decided to remind you that the person in charge of the Church of Plague Source here, the plague messenger Fez, also died at my hands. Perhaps the Source of Plague will be so crazy that they will kill the believers and destroy the base in order to install spies, but they will be so crazy that they will kill their general manager on this island in order to install spies!?"
My voice became louder and louder, and at the end I was already roaring. Kolf Chaco seemed to be unable to bear the pressure anymore and sat down on the ground.
"How is this possible? How is this possible?" He murmured to himself.
"Mr. Fez was really killed by you?" He suddenly looked up at me, "How is this possible!"
"Yes, he was killed by me and died at my hands, and his body was gone," I looked at him with a sneer, "Are you not going to deny it?"
Kolf Chaco seemed to have grown twenty years old all of a sudden. He collapsed on the ground, hunched over, and suddenly sighed heavily, "I'm tired, Salenovis, from the moment you showed that flame, I knew who you were."
"Besides," he smiled self-deprecatingly, "our roots have been completely lifted up by you. Even if we continue to lurk, what's the point?"
He smiled bitterly and looked at a group of nobles who were like him, as if they were drained from their backbone... Oh no, it should be said that the spies from the source of the plague opened their mouths tremblingly.
"We surrender."
The collapse of Kolf Chaco and his men meant the complete failure of the plague source cult in Cross City. Brad Collo did not hesitate at all. He waved his hand and directed his soldiers, and arrested everyone present with the cooperation of the city hall guards.
Unsurprisingly, there were also a small group of believers among the City Hall guards, but they were quickly shot into sieve by storm crossbow arrows.
Their bodies were tied to temporary wooden pillars built in the Town Hall Square to warn everyone in the city.
As for Kolf Chaco? The poor baron could not accept the fact that Fez had been killed by me until he was in prison. His psychological defense was completely defeated by me, and he did not even need to interrogate the city guards. He confessed all the spies in the city.
The list he provided shocked us. The plague Source Church has penetrated this city very thoroughly. From ordinary citizens to nobles, from beggars to underclass gangsters, and soldiers from the city guards, there are many plague Source Christians who have mixed in almost every class. They look exactly like normal people and live in this not-so-large city.
Holding this list and with the temporary authorization of the City Hall, Brad Collo had a shallow face and began to cleanse the plague source of the city with a large number of soldiers from the City Guard.
Hickrad and I returned to Sword and Rose, and Garcia was on it. Fortunately, the kind boss here is not a believer at the source of the plague.
He obviously knew what happened today, claiming that Hickrad and I were the heroes of the city, he gave us free food and equally free cold beer, and even the most luxurious rooms were also free to us.
After celebrating, he and the guests on the first floor escorted Hickrad and me into their respective rooms.
I stood in front of the window and stared quietly at the Cross Street outside the window. From time to time, I could see a flash of light flashing by in the distance. The arrest team led by Brad Collow.
To many people, tonight is destined to be a sleepless night. Many of the spies, especially those with good wealth, already have a family in Cross. I can imagine the scenes of soldiers breaking into their homes, their wives or husbands, and their children howling.
I sighed. For these people, no side is wrong, but this is war, and war always has its victims.
After a last look at Cross, I turned off the oil lamp. No matter what, I can finally have a good night's sleep tonight.
