Chapter 6 Siegfried's Wall
Three days passed in the blink of an eye. I rode my own horse and followed Knight Cid out of the castle. The horse carried the lance Knight Cid would use and my two-handed sword.
This was the first time I saw the soldiers under Knight Cid. Everyone stood neatly outside the castle, forming a square formation. The soldiers in the front square held spears and shields, and had long swords at their waists.
, wearing thick iron armor.
I can't bear it. These pikemen are the front line of the Kingdom's army, the first row of soldiers to face the Empire's firepower.
To put it harshly, they are cannon fodder.
The two phalanxes at the back were all crossbowmen, each holding a crossbow, carrying a pot of crossbow arrows and a long sword on their waist, and carrying an iron shield on their backs.
At the front are the five knights I saw a few days ago. The horses under each of them are armored.
"Ready, Lord Cid." A knight who looked very young rode up to us. "One hundred spearmen and two hundred crossbowmen under your command are ready."
Cid nodded, "Flag," he turned to me and whispered to me. I was stunned for a moment, and then hurriedly handed him the flag he hung on my horse in the morning.
The top of the flagpole was a sharp gun tip. Cid raised the gun, and a flag stood proudly in the wind. The flag had a gray base with a wide black cross pattern on it. The black cross pattern was decorated with a golden linear pattern. The intersection of the crosses
A golden shield was drawn, and inside the shield was a black eagle screaming toward the sky.
This is the symbol of the Kingdom of Valenlia. In the upper left corner of the flag is the family crest of the Cid family, a budding iris.
"Warriors! Knights! Followers of the Fairy of the Lake! Let's set out for the sake of the kingdom and glory!"
The five retainer knights raised the common kingdom flags and drove their horses forward with the Cid knights, and behind them were the foot troops advancing in an orderly manner.
The fiefdom of Knight Cid is not too far from the border city wall. After two days of marching, we approached the Siegfried Wall on the border.
When we arrived, the fighting was at its most intense. We could hear shouts of death three miles away. Even though I was mentally prepared, I was still shocked by the scene in front of me.
The Siegfried Wall in front of us is at least twenty meters high. A huge gap has been made in the middle of the majestic and neat protective wall. Although the top of the wall is still passable, Imperial soldiers are constantly charging towards this gap.
Opposite the gap, there are at least two phalanxes of spearmen. They are holding long swords and fighting with the imperial soldiers who are rushing up. Bullets fly from time to time. Most of them are not serious even if they are shot. Only
Some unlucky ones had been shot in the heart or head and went to see the Fairy of the Lake on the spot.
"Get ready to fight! The Fairy of the Lake protects us!" Knight Cid handed me the flag and held the lance hanging on the side of the horse. The five knights behind him planted the flag on the ground and did the same thing as him
Actions.
"You will find the commander later, and be sure not to cross this gap." Knight Cid bent down and warned me, then straightened up, "Knights of the Cid family, charge with me! The remaining warriors, go
Support your compatriots!"
I drove my horse towards the elevator. Cid and his five retainers lined up in a line, knocked the horse's belly hard, and charged towards the battlefield. The infantry behind them immediately joined their compatriots.
"Hurry up and put the elevator down, you idiot, reinforcements are coming!" I was standing under the city wall, worried about Cide's safety, when I suddenly heard a loud voice coming from above.
I looked up and saw that the rope on the winch continued to loosen and the elevator slowly dropped in front of me.
This was a very large elevator, so I rode directly into it, holding up the kingdom flag with the Cide family crest in my hand.
The elevator slowly lifted off the ground while shaking, and I was quickly sent to the top of the city wall. In the chaos, I met the owner of the loud voice, Sir Galahad, who is also the garrison of this section of the city wall. He is a hot-tempered man.
The man, about thirty years old, was wearing a light chainmail suit with bright blue runes painted on it.
"From the Cide family, huh? Come with me." He raised his head, glanced at the flag I was holding, and then walked quickly to the other side of the city wall. I got off my horse, followed him, and looked outside the city wall.
go.
The imperial army was divided into three groups under the city wall, which meant that there were at least three gaps in the city wall, as far as I could see. Many of the kingdom's pikemen set up gun arrays at the gaps, and bullets would come from time to time, and then they collided with each other.
A strong and thick bulletproof shield, or penetrated into a soldier's body.
Behind the gun array were uniform crossbowmen. They were probably the only force among the kingdom's ordinary troops that could effectively counterattack. Waves of crossbow arrows flew out from behind the gun array, repelling the Imperial stormtroopers who tried to rush in.
There are large ballistae at regular intervals on the city wall. There are several soldiers beside each large ballista to control it. From time to time, they will fire a terrifyingly large crossbow arrow, stringing together the imperial soldiers who are attacking the bottom of the city wall.
I even saw some front-loaded cannons on the city walls. Although these cannons were backward, the solid iron bullets they fired could always leave a trail of blood among the Imperial troops.
"Are you the new retinue of that boy Cid?" Sir Galahad asked me. I nodded and he laughed, "Then you have to be careful. His last retinue was shot in the head by an imperial sniper.
Smash these imperial cowards who have no honor at all."
He turned around, "They are still trying to break through the Siegfried Wall. They have been trying for three days. The kingdom's wall is not that easy to break through." He sneered, "And we are not idiots who don't know how to make progress."
"Okay," he waved to me, "let's find this old bastard Cid where...ah! Over there!"
I followed his fingers and found Cid and his retainers who had run to the bottom of the city wall and were wearing silver-gray armor. They looked like they had just charged through an Imperial Army unit, and everyone was covered in blood.
, Knight Cid also had a lot of body parts and pieces of meat hanging on his body.
Soon I saw this respectable knight again. He took the elevator to the top of the city wall. There were only four knights left beside him. "Hahaha! Old bastard Cid, I'm so happy to see you again." Galaha.
The German knight quickly walked to the elevator and gave Cid a big hug.
"I'm glad to see you too, Galahad." Cid smiled and walked towards me with Galahad. "I'm glad to see you are safe, Saren."
I bowed to him, "Me too, sir, is everything going well? Do you need a new lance?"
"It didn't go well," Cid showed a sad expression, "Our first charge went well, everyone broke through the Imperial Army's team, but the second time," he smiled bitterly, "The second time
It didn't go well. When we came back, we were attacked by a new gun. Tour was hit all over the face by a very small bullet and fell off his horse. The blessing of the Lake Fairy could not stop the bullet.
"
"Have those cowards of the Imperial Army come up with new weapons again?" Galahad frowned, "And it seems to be a weapon aimed at knights. This is not good..." His voice became smaller and smaller as he spoke, and finally he started walking silently.
Come.
"Actually, I know what it is," I decided to tell what I knew. Both Galahad and Cid looked at me with eager eyes, "That thing is called a shotgun, codenamed Knight Bane. It only works very close."
The greater the damage, the greater the distance." I hurriedly told all the materials I had seen in the Thieves Guild.
"Thank you very much, Saren." After listening, Cid bowed to me seriously, and the knights behind him, including Sir Galahad, bowed to me. "Your information will save
The lives of countless knights.”
"I'm serious, Mr. Sid," I hurriedly helped them all up, "you will always know what this thing is, I didn't help much."
"We know for ourselves that the price will be the lives of the knights." Cid told me seriously, "So we have to thank you."
"They're here again!" A loud roar interrupted our conversation, and a fire bomb shot from the bottom of the city wall. Fortunately, it only hit the city wall and made a small crater.
"It's the mage of the empire!" Sir Galahad roared angrily, "Mage, where is our mage? There are also priests and priests, please come up!"
I soon saw a large group of people in robes leaning against the city wall. Some were dressed similarly to Father Bishop, holding statues of the Lake Fairy in their hands. Others were wizards I hated, and they began to chant.
Chanting spells, sending ice arrows, fireballs, and even light beams, the rapids condensed from their hands and shot towards the mages below the city.
The Imperial Stormtroopers took advantage of the situation and launched a second wave of attacks. They were wearing plate armor and each of them had a submachine gun in their hand, and they rushed towards our gap.
"Saren, give me a lance. The one I just broke was broken." Knight Cid straightened up and told me in an extremely urgent tone.
I didn't dare to be lazy, so I hurried back to my horse, took off a lance and handed it to Cid.
Cide nodded to me, closed his visor, and walked to the elevator with the remaining four retainers.
"Wait a minute, Cid!" Galahad rushed over, "I am preparing to launch a joint charge. You and your retainers will report it. All knights must act together." He paused and continued with a worried tone.
Said, "Remember to remind them about the shotgun, and I will send someone to explain it as well."
Sid nodded, turned around and walked into the elevator, waved to me, and quickly disappeared from my sight.
A fireball hit at this time, and violent flames exploded near the crenel, swallowing up the two unlucky soldiers.
"The main gunner of the No. 4 crossbow gun is dead!" I heard someone shouting in the chaos.
"Damn it," I heard Sir Galahad yell, and he quickly walked to my side, "Boy, I need you to do something. The No. 4 ballista needs a main gunner."
I nodded and followed the direction he pointed to the No. 4 ballista. The body of the main gunner fell to the side. It had been burnt to pitch black char, obviously being hit by a fire spell.
Then I discovered a serious problem, I don't know how to use this thing.
Fortunately, the soldier responsible for pulling the string and the soldier responsible for loading the crossbow arrows knew how to do it, so the soldier loading the crossbow arrows took the position of the main gunner, and I was responsible for loading the new crossbow arrows.
The offensive is still continuing. In addition to our ballistae, there are also a large number of crossbowmen behind the crenellations. They provide the main fire support for the soldiers at the bottom of the city wall. From time to time, crossbowmen are hit by spells, and they turn over in pain.
The city walls fell to the ground, just hoping to die immediately. Some were luckier, and the sniper's bullet hit them. They died at that moment, and then fell softly to the ground.
"Look! It's our knight! Long live the kingdom! Long live the Lady of the Lake!" I don't know how long it took, it felt like a year had passed. After dozens of crossbowmen around me had fallen, I heard a loud cry.
Shouting with joy, the soldiers on the wall cheered as if we had won the victory.
I leaned against the crenel, and this was the first time in my life that I saw the Kingdom Knights charging. I couldn't count how many Kingdom Knights there were, at least a hundred, I guess.
They lined up in rows and charged amidst the cheers and chants of priests. The first knights cut through the Imperial Army's troops like hot knives cutting through butter, but the Imperial Army's counterattack was not ineffective. Three horses
The war horses have lost their masters forever.
The second column of knights followed and rushed into the crowd. I saw them holding giant axes or two-handed swords. Most of the Imperial soldiers on the charging route were chopped into scattered corpses by them.
The imperial army's counterattack became more fierce, and this time seven knights fell on the charging road.
The last row of knights entered. The military uniforms or simple protection worn by the imperial soldiers could not stop the accelerating maces, swords and battle axes. Blood and flesh were flying everywhere for a while, and the wailing of the imperial soldiers could even be heard on the city wall.
Can hear clearly.
After three waves of charges, a total of sixteen families lost their sons, husbands or fathers. The remaining knights reorganized into three rows, took the horses of the fallen knights, and launched the first attack on the imperial soldiers who had not yet recovered.
Second round charge.
The soldiers rushed into the crowd, splitting the human body with the weapons in their hands and picking up the pieces of meat. From time to time, they could hear a thunderous sound, which was the sound of shotguns firing.
Most of the Imperial soldiers tried to resist with bayonets and daggers, but were trampled to pieces by horses, split in half by battle axes, and had their heads smashed by maces.
The knights rushed back to the city wall. Behind them were the collapsed imperial troops. I even saw a lot of wreckage from mages.
No matter how many people there are in their army, I guess they will all suffer heavy losses.
What reassured me was that Knight Cid was unharmed. He was sitting upright on his horse, in the center of the second row, as usual.
"Well done, boys, well done!" A familiar loud voice sounded, and Sir Galahad walked to the city wall with a smile, "We taught these imperial rats a hard lesson today, if they still dare
Come, kill them all, and use their blood to moisten the hooves of the war horses and the land of the kingdom! We are temporarily victorious!"
Everyone cheered and raised their weapons. The joy of victory spread along this section of the city wall.
