Chapter 251: The Era of Whimsy

But what many people don’t know is that whether it is Bian Jing in the Northern Song Dynasty or Lin'an in the Southern Song Dynasty, the population size is far higher than that in Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty and far more than other cities in the world at that time. The prosperity and prosperity of the Communist Party can only rely on fantasy in the later dynasties of the Communist Party.

Chen Yinke, a master of Chinese studies, said: "The culture of the Chinese nation has evolved for thousands of years and has been created in the Zhao and Song dynasties."

What kind of experience is it to be fully reflected in a dynasty? Six of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties are listed! Zhao Kuangyin, the Emperor Taizu of Song, must have never imagined that his selfishness has created the most brilliant and moving fireworks in the historical night sky.

In 1960, Zhao Kuangyin passed the Chenqiao mutiny and put on a yellow robe. He walked away from the helpless young emperor of the Later Zhou Dynasty. From then on, he was not very relieved about military generals... "Releasing military power with a glass of wine", the Song Dynasty slowly unfolded the scroll of "right literature suppressing military power" and "literary steadfast country". "There is a golden house in the book, and the beautiful beauty in the book" is the insight from the emperor of the Song Dynasty!

When Song Taizu held military power with one hand and the other was engaged in production, the enlightened "Jianlong Governance" quickly healed the wounds of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms on China, and once again blossomed into an extraordinary civilized world. There is one thing in this world that makes people sigh, that is: equality.

The scientific examinations of the Song Dynasty were real national scientific examinations. Not only did they "recruit scholars without asking for families", but they also had a stricter assessment system for "officials" (second-generation officials). It can be said that the key to changing destiny was handed over to everyone; the Song Dynasty no longer had the hierarchy of good people and untouchables, and the contract system made people's awareness of equality more concrete: after the work of the city, they could decide whether to change jobs, and after farming the land this year, they could also freely decide to stay or not!

Breaking the shackles of fixed life experience and abolishing the control of population migration, the mobility of society in the Song Dynasty rose unprecedentedly.

Some people once said that the Song Dynasty was a dynasty with poverty and weakness. But "weakness" may be true, but I don't know where to start with "poverty"!

During the Song Dynasty, the land Silk Road was blocked by Xixia, Tubo and others, but the Song people turned their attention to the vast coastline. The Maritime Silk Road ushered in a real explosion in the Song Dynasty. When Emperor Shenzong of Song was in power, he also introduced China's first "Overseas Trade Law" "Maritime Law".

There were more than 20 ports for foreign trade in the Song Dynasty, and the five "Maritime Departments" set up in Guangzhou, Quanzhou, Mingzhou, Hangzhou and Mizhou even acted as a trade center, welcomed merchant ships and cargo from more than 60 countries in the sea, and their business scope was even as far as the Arabian Peninsula and the east coast of Africa. The patterns and rough lines on the porcelain unearthed in the "Nanhai-1" shipwreck were by no means owned by Chinese culture, and were completely customized for being unearthed abroad... This is really unimaginable!

Within the country, business is already a part of everyone's life. The once arrogant Tang Dynasty, Chang'an City was square and well-organized, and transactions could only be made in designated east and west cities. They could only enter and exit when they heard the sound of a trumpet. The commercial area was completely separated from the residential area, and people were not allowed to go out at night, which was particularly frustrating.

The Bianjing of the Song Dynasty grew up according to people's wishes. Many cargo distribution centers were formed spontaneously on both sides of the Bian River, and the markets were naturally formed in the most appropriate places. "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" talks about such a scenery:

Outside the city wall, vendors naturally gathered in the town, and various shops were opened along the streets, a street of food, a street of clothing, a street of rouge and powder... The important thing is that you can visit all night!

An official once wrote a letter to Emperor Zhenzong of Song, saying that those vendors were too free and should set rules for the market.

Emperor Zhenzong of Song asked back: Isn’t that disturbing the people?

With emperors like this, the wealth of the people is naturally no problem. It was also from Emperor Zhenzong of Song that the industrial and commercial tax in the Song Dynasty gradually exceeded the agricultural tax. By the reign of Emperor Xiaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty, non-agricultural tax accounted for more than 80%, which means that peasant uprisings basically would not shake the foundation of the country.

For more than two thousand years, most dynasties in China have changed from peasant uprisings, with the exception of the Song Dynasty!

Therefore, the Song Dynasty was not only not poor, but was actually rich; the Song Dynasty was not weak because it was few soldiers, but because the court always restricted military generals.

The emperors of the Song Dynasty always liked to "break money and eliminate disasters". They did not want to use force for anything that could be solved with money. The rulers of the Song Dynasty were never able to convert their abundant fiscal revenue into powerful national defense forces. Whenever foreign enemies invaded, they were always beaten and angry, paid compensation and peace, and even broke up the mountains and rivers, died and destroyed the country. This is the eternal sigh of historians in later generations.

However, the people living in the Song Dynasty were not as sad as us.

Wealth gave the Song people enough confidence to develop various fun in daily life. In "Dream of Tokyo" even directly shouted: Luxury and spirituality are not the patent for staying up late. The night owls in Bianjing gradually dispersed, the five drums ringed, the morning market began again, and it was impossible to stop it from raining or snowing. When it came to Lantern Festival, it was even more noisy. Not only was the lights bright, but people were dressed in colorful clothes. The government also gave money to vendors and citizens to celebrate the Lantern Festival.

Xin Qiji described the scene as:

"The east wind blooms thousands of flowers at night,

It blows down even more, and the stars are like rain.

BMW carts are full of fragrance.

The sound of the phoenix flute moves, the light of the jade pot turns, and the fish and dragon dance overnight.

The moths and willows are golden wisps,

The smile is filled with fragrance.

Looking for him for a long time, looking back suddenly

But that man is in the dim light."

The streets of Lin'an are full of restaurants and brothels, but the officials of the court were unlucky to enjoy it. Because the Song Dynasty had strict rules: officials were not allowed to enter the restaurant, and they would not be able to pay for it at their own expense!

The Song Dynasty banned gambling, and only during festivals would a gambling game called "Guanpu". When the day's play ended, many people used bamboo poles to carry the spoils and returned with a load of trophys, as if the joy of catching a bunch of dolls.

The Song people loved sports, and golf was popular in the Song Dynasty, but the Song people bluntly called it "Chuiwan".

The era of national football was also in the Song Dynasty, which was called "Cuju". The Song people's balls were made of twelve pieces of cowhide sewn on the outside of the air-filled pig bladder, and the specifications were no different from modern football.

The Song people especially love cats and dogs, and they also have careful feeding plans. They raise dogs to feed mixed grains, and feed cats dried fish. From time to time, they have to go to "change cats and dogs" for pet grooming.

In such a prosperous city, Bianjing and Lin'an, are we troubled by dry and wet garbage every day?

In terms of urban management, the Song Dynasty clearly stipulates that those who get garbage will have sixty sticks, and the managers do not seriously enforce the law, which is the same crime. The Song Hui Yao Draft also stipulates that no dirt or rubble is allowed to pour into the canal, otherwise the stick will be eighty sticks.

In addition to the unique and unique aspects of life, the Song Dynasty's contribution to science and technology was also not vague. Some inventions that changed the world, such as movable type printing, compass used for navigation, and the earliest rockets, muskets and earliest paper money, all appeared in the Song Dynasty.
