Chapter 43 Tax Collectors

Manda chose the second path, not a fool's guess, but he saw the gold coins with his cross-eyed eyes.

This was the first time he used his skills to judge things without real objects. Although getting to know the Viscount means more opportunities, it is also an urgent task to make a living. He repeatedly considered these two choices in his mind, and it was not until his brain began to suck violently that he saw a gold coin on the second road.

This choice is more valuable. Manda agreed with Dunison on the spot to deliver ten cans of wine tomorrow and handed over to the lord of Niujiao Town, Viscount Geisak.

After leaving Dunison's residence, Manda had to go to the market to purchase grain. It was too difficult to purchase five thousand pounds at a time. Manda first bought two thousand pounds, twenty more wine barrels, and used two ox carts to pull them back to the tavern.

The door of the tavern was closed, and Worm seemed to have forgotten to open it. This was not normal. Although he did not like to entertain guests, he always maintained a high enthusiasm for the tavern business.

The pendant is a little hot, is there any danger?

Manda asked the coachman to unload the grain and wine barrels outside the door, climbed over the wall and jumped into the yard, and entered the tavern lobby through the back door.

The scene in front of him shocked him. Two people were tied to the pillars, and Worm sat aside and fell into deep thought.

These two people were the two soldiers who came to collect taxes last month. Manda was cheated of twenty-five silver coins by them. I really didn't expect that these two liars would dare to come again!

They had scars on their faces, obviously they were beaten by Worm, with a scribble in their mouths, red eyes, and snots on their noses, and seemed to have a call for help in their eyes.

And Worm is thinking about a serious question at this moment, should he kill them?

If it were usual, Worm would have twisted their heads without hesitation, but now he doesn't want to make a death, he is worried that it will affect the business of the tavern.

"I've searched their purse, which contained more than 70 silver coins and more than 100 copper coins. Let's leave the money and put them in it." After careful consideration, Worm gave the above suggestions.

Manda looked at the two unlucky guys and turned to Worm and said, "Where did you find them?"

"They are still here to collect taxes and want to cheat us again," Worm said.

Manda laughed loudly: "You really think we are so easy to cheat..."

Before he finished speaking, laughter came to an abrupt end, and Manda discovered a serious problem.

These two people pretended to be viscount's retainers to come here to collect taxes. After they left, the real retainers would definitely come to collect taxes again, and their scam was completely exposed.

No normal person can come here again to perform the same scam. This is a typical behavior of dying, unless these two people are incompetent.

Manda stared at the two soldiers for a long time. They might not be very smart, but they have not reached a low level. Perhaps there is another reasonable explanation for this matter.

They were real tax collectors, and the group of people who came later were liars.

Manda's head buzzed, and he carefully recalled every detail before. They had neither the documents nor the viscount's clan emblem, and his rude attitude seemed like a fake.

But this is illogical...

After thinking about it, Manda untied their ropes, opened the door to the tavern, and returned the purse to them.

"Let's go." Manda didn't say much, saying a word could cause even greater trouble.

A soldier pointed to Manda's nose and said, "You are finished, wait for Lord Viscount to take you..."

Another soldier covered his mouth: "Stop saying anything more, leave here quickly!"

The two soldiers ran out of the tavern, and Worm shook his head and said, "You let them go like that? When did your heart become so good?"

Manda licked her lips and said, "No, no, we may be in big trouble!"

All night, Manda was nervous and unable to fall asleep. The next day, it was dawn, and he was still struggling whether to go to the city.

The pendant is as cold as frost. It seems that the danger has passed. Perhaps those two people are born idiots, they have no brains at all, they just want to try their luck.

After thinking about the path Dunison pointed out, and then the five gold coins he paid, Manda gritted her teeth and hired a ox cart to deliver ten barrels of wine to Dunison's residence.

Along the way, Manda held the pendant tightly. Whenever there was any sign of heat, Manda would jump out of the car and escape immediately.

But until the ox cart stopped in front of Dunison's door, the pendant was still cold.

Dunison received the red wine and immediately gave Manda thirty silver coins: "Come to me again in two days. If the Viscount agrees to this business, I will give you the remaining fifty silver coins. If the Earl does not agree, these wines will be sold to me."

Dunison's generosity made Manda feel a little relieved, and before leaving he asked a question: "Does it take taxes to open a tavern?"

"What do you think?" Dunison thought the question was stupid. "How can you not pay taxes when doing business? Haven't the tax collector come to collect taxes yet?"

"Not yet." Manda answered very calmly.

"Strange, I have reported this to the tax collectors for a long time. They should have gone last month... These days are the days when they collect taxes. You have to make up for the taxes from last month, twenty-five silver coins a month, otherwise we will have trouble."

"What kind of person is a tax collector?" Manda asked calmly.

"It's the Viscount's guards, they're all a bit rough, but you'd better be polite to them."

Manda swallowed and continued to ask calmly: "Will they bring the clerk and Lord Viscount's clan emblem?"

"Classic and clan emblem? Where did you hear it?" Dunison looked at Manda in surprise?

"I saw it in a book."

"There are still books like this?" Dunison shook his head and smiled. "The tax collectors don't bring any documents. Most vendors don't recognize words. What's the use of carrying that thing? It's even more impossible to have a clan emblem. How can it be handed over to the tax collectors, which symbolizes the majesty of Lord Viscount?"

"Yes," Manda nodded with a smile, "See you in two days."

I won’t see you in two days. Viscount will directly capture me into the dungeon because I beat the tax collector.

Manda walked to the market, bought nothing, and hired only a carriage.

He faced a difficult choice, whether to run alone or take Worm with him.

He was worried that Worm would not escape, but he also remembered the old witch's advice, never try to escape without the Count's permission, unless you have a way to kill him.

It was safest to escape back to the valley with Worm. He returned to the tavern in a carriage and saw that the warehouse gate was closed, and Worm should have made wine inside.

"We are in big trouble. Come out quickly and pack up. We must leave here immediately!"

Worm walked out of the warehouse and closed the door: "Tell me what happened first, otherwise I won't leave the tavern."

"If I told you, would you leave?"
