Chapter 4 Investigation
On the side of the road, an ordinary newsstand looks inconspicuous on the streets of Chicago where people are circulating.
"Is there any news?" asked a man in his early forties.
He was not asking the owner of the newsstand, but asking about a short and fat man next to him who had just picked up the newspaper.
The short and fat man didn't answer, but turned around and winked, then took a step forward and walked in one direction.
Five minutes later, Frank and Officer Arthur, the second boss of the Genovese family, sat side by side on a bench next to the square, each lowering his head to feed the pigeons.
"Are you trying to ask about the explosion at Beifeng Island Park last night?" Arthur spoke first. Although he was talking to Frank, his eyes did not contact the other party at all, and his head was on the side, looking like he was concentrating on feeding pigeons.
As a corrupt policeman, Arthur has been very experienced. He has been a policeman for more than twenty years and has seen many colleagues or superiors who have taken dirty money and eventually sent to prison. He also knows that as long as he has shaken his interests for that time, he will never be clean. So being cautious has now become Arthur's habit. In this situation, even if someone secretly photographed him, he can say, "I just happened to sit on the same bench with a second-in-commander of a mafia family while feeding pigeons. What can I do if he wants to sit over in public?"
If he expects to get a pension alive in ten years, he must be a good actor every minute and every second, and imagine that cameras are everywhere. As the saying goes, it is rare to be confused along the way, and it is rare to be numb all the way. On this endless road, he can only be relieved of the pain of sobering in his dreams.
Frank's attainment in performing arts was obviously much different from Arthur, but with a good teacher around him, he followed suit, rubbed his neck, and looked at other places unnaturally, "Yes, let's talk, Officer Arthur."
Arthur said: "Actually, I have no more information than the reports in the newspaper. Yesterday evening, a short time before the park closed, an explosion occurred in a remote area near the water. There were two loud noises in a short time. Then a park manager heard the noise and called the police. He was frightened and thought it was a terrorist attack. Because he was nearby, in addition to the explosion, he vaguely heard some gunshots, so he described it on the phone like a World War.
Just about half an hour ago, a traffic chaos caused by hit-and-run occurred in the area around Highway 41. The bureau sent many patrol vehicles and police forces to maintain order, which happened to happen. In addition, the administrator described it as if it was really like that, so hundreds of policemen turned the front of the car and drove onto Highway E. We were even mentally prepared to be on the front line of freedom and almost called HL to support. As a result, when we arrived at the park, we only saw two burned cars and some footprints. We searched for a radius of half a mile, and found no bodies, no wounded, and no slogans or other things left by organizations or individuals.
The bureau’s follow-up investigation into this matter this week should continue. Now many police officers are contacting their informants, hoping to find a big case from this explosion. What else do you need to know?”
Frank continued to ask calmly: "Officer Arthur, let's analyze from your professional perspective, what might be the truth of this matter?"
Arthur was sprinkling corn kernels in his hand and thought for a while: "If you don't come to ask me about this today, I would suggest that the colleagues in charge of this case write in the closing report that a group of hippies accidentally caused a fire while raising medicine in the park, which led to the explosion of two cars. One of them was confirmed to be a stolen vehicle, and there was a record of hit-and-run traffic accidents and runs. There is currently no specific number or characteristics of eyewitnesses and suspects. Finally, it was archived and recorded."
Frank smiled and said, "So, my curiosity will change your opinion?"
Arthur said: "You have to tell me something I don't know before I will have a conclusion."
Frank said: "Suppose one of the two cars yesterday was used by our company's employees to transport goods; but the other one was not a pickup party, but an unknown origin."
Arthur's movements stopped for about two seconds, and then cursed: "Hell..."
Frank just smiled unanimously, waiting for the other party's response.
This time, Arthur was silent for a long time, and then replied after thinking for a while: "Based on the on-site investigation, I will give you two possible conclusions. The first is that your employee swallowed the goods or money and ran away.
They went to steal a car in advance and deliberately used the car to create a traffic accident that caused a commotion. Finally, they parked next to the cargo truck and created an explosion before leaving, as if they were attacked by some force or someone. Two cars at the scene just explained this point, but in fact, these illusions and fogs are used to cover up the simple truth. Everything is done for the Genovese family to avoid being chased afterwards."
After hearing this, Frank thought for a while and said, "I have to tell you something. Officer Arthur, it may be helpful to you. We have contacted the pickup party and they said that the transaction last night was very smooth at the beginning, but after the end, a young man suddenly appeared to disrupt the situation. He came on foot and had no car, so he might have accomplices.
Based on your first conclusion, I don’t rule out the possibility that the young man was hired by my employee to act. Maybe the conflict between them was just for the pickup party to watch, but I think if I really want to act, I should hire a group of live-fire evil stars to drive an SUV to the scene and shoot directly, which is more convincing."
Arthur glanced at the other party: "You have a bad temper with only three points to everyone. Frank, do you have anything else to tell me? Let me make a wrong judgment based on limited information and then you deny it. This is a waste of time."
Frank said: "Please forgive me, Officer Arthur, but I can't live to this day because of suspicion and caution. I can't determine if there is a kind of recording device hidden in your top pocket now in case of future needs."
Arthur did not continue this topic because he had a ghost in his heart. He had been working with the Genovese family for a long time. In fact, there were quite a lot of recordings in the family for emergencies...
"Okay, let me talk about the second possible situation, that is, the 'young man' you mentioned and the unknown accomplices of others killed all your employees, swallowed the payment for the transaction, and threw away the means of transportation. Maybe they had other cars, maybe not, in short, they tried to escape."
Frank said again: "Did your police not set up a checkpoint to check?"
"Of course, it was set up. After receiving the alarm for the explosion, I quickly set up a card on Highway E. All cars leaving Beifeng Island Park must be checked. In fact, there are not many. The suspicious guys searched on the spot and recorded the driver's license information. However, the illegal elements found were just a few drivers who did not pay the ticket. I searched a lot of people, but I didn't find the payment for the goods you mentioned or the explosive device we expected at the time. The only contraband was a few ounces of marijuana." Atherton said, "Based on the new situation you just told me, I guess that group of people must have used some clever method to avoid the investigation. Maybe they hid the money somewhere in the park and planned to get it later."
Frank said: "So...can you please, Officer Arthur, try to find that money, and the bodies of our employees."
Arthur spread all the corn on his hands and clapped his hands to stand up: "I'm just speculating. Maybe they've taken the money out of the park last night, but I'll try to find it. As for your employees, I'm sorry, Frank, if their bodies were thrown into Lake Michigan, they might have floated to Milwaukee now, let alone other methods of abandoning corpses. You know more than I do, right?"
Frank took out an envelope from his arms and put it in the middle of the bench. The thickness was enough to make people think: "Actually, I don't have much hope, but we also have our own rules. It's not a trivial matter for family members to disappear or be killed. Just like you police, you do things according to the rules, and we follow the tradition, so we look for them.
The Genovese family will handle the truth of the matter and the sanctions work themselves." He left after he said that.
